Create Meaningful Titles: Quoting the People in Your Pages

Last week, we explored the strategy of borrowing titles. This week, we’re going to variate that idea by borrowing titles from the people who inspire our memory keeping. We’re exploring the strategy of quoting the people in your pages.

There are times when the people in my life say the most hilarious things. There are times when the stories of those hilarious things collide with my scrapbooking. I find my family and friends are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for titles, especially the little people. Kids really do say the darnedest things! I’m using funny as an example because really, when you hear someone say something meaningful, quotable and scrap-worthy, you know it.

This strategy requires a little more work than the others we discussed. Usually when you hear someone say something hilarious or super cute, your Photoshop isn’t in front of you open. Chances are, you won’t remember their quote exactly when you finally do have the opportunity to scrapbook the story. Yet, there are easy solutions for making a note of what a person says so you can use it as a title later.

Most of us, no matter where are, have our smart phones handy for taking photos. When I’m out and about and I hear something hilarious fly from the mouth of my son, I make a note of it on my Cozi Calendar app in the journal section. You don’t have to use Cozi, you can use any app that allows you to quickly type in the quote or the story. Any app that let’s record what you hear with the date will work: Instagram, Collect or even Facebook could easily record the hilarity. It’s just matter of adapting your process to include this information with your photos, getting in the habit of making quick notes.

At home, I keep a little notebook handy to capture these funny quotes, but. I also make use of Facebook and my Cozi Calendar desktop app to record notes. It all depends on what is more convenient at the moment. The idea is to have those notes easy to access when it’s time to create a layout. Because I access these tools regularly, it was an easy habit to establish.

Tip: Create a unique hashtag or tag to easily pull up your notes easily

How do you know what part of the quote should be the title? That’s the question you may be asking right now. If it’s a funny quote or conversation, the easiest way to isolate the title is to use the punch line, or the line that makes you laugh the hardest. For a more emotional or profound quote, use the words that have the most impact.

For example, in This Balloon is Haunted (originally made for Get It Scrapped’s article on taking titles from journaling that’s totally worth reading), the title is a quote from my sister-in-law. It sums up the story, is kinda a funny statement and definitely gets you interested in the story.

Here, Nice Pace is the title…and the most endearing phrase in my son’s statement. (click here to learn how I combined word art, alphas and a font to make this the title)

There’s no one-size-fits all rule for determining whether to use the whole quote as title or just a phrase. The good news is that you have great instincts and the creative freedom to choose what’s most meaningful to you. In bite size terms, here’s a to-do list:

  • Make capturing quotes a habit by
  • noting them with apps and tools you already use
  • then, pull out the meaningful bits for your page titles.
  • Rendering those titles with the strategies you’ve previously learned in this series.

Ta-da!!
