What is Digital Scrapbooking?
A first part of a series to Learn Digital Scrapbooking
Most of us know what scrapbooking is. Many of your have seen pretty pages around the web and have contemplated whether to learn digital scrapbooking or not. Many of us have, at some point in our lives, experimented with scrapbooking whether it was during school, at home with mom, or with your friends!
Scrapbooking is a visual and creative way to document and archive your photos. It is creative memory keeping.
Really, Scrapbooking these days is SO much more than just paper + scissors + glue! But you aren’t here to listen to me ramble on about Scrapbooking. You are here to hear about Digital Scrapbooking.
This is the formal defintion is:
Digital scrapbooking is the term for the creation of a new 2D artwork by re-combining various graphic elements. It is a form of scrapbooking that is done using a personal computer, digital or scanned photos and computer graphics software.
Could you spot the difference between a digital and traditional paper layout above? Well, the left is an actual scrapbooking page I created by hand and the one on the right side is a digital layout I made in Photoshop. Pretty cool huh?
Digital Scrapbooking can be just as fun and creative as regular scrapbooking but without the mess (and the cost!).
★ It’s Cheaper! Digital Scrapbooking is much easier on your wallet than purchasing tangible scrapbooking products!
★ Convenient! You have the ability to quickly and easily find products and download them instantaneously for specific themes without having to jump in your car and go hunting or wait days or weeks until your online order has shipped!
★ Freedom! You can alter colours have your pages look exactly how you want.
★ No Mistakes! Ctrl + z is your best friend – you can’t make a mistake on a page with this feature!
★ Time Saving! You could create digital pages in just minutes depending on how complex it is.
★ No mess! With the absence of glue and scissors, there is no mess to clean up when you are finished!
★ Flat Albums! If you print your digital pages, you can create albums without the bulk (and without loose embellishments falling out!)
★ No touch! You lose the hands experience of the craft which many scrapbookers appreciate.
★ 2D – No matter how much you are great at shadowing, your digital page will always be flat!
★ Learning Curve – To learn digital scrapbooking you’ll need to learn a graphics program, and that takes practice and time!
★ Rewarding! There is something about all the effort and heart you put into a page regardless of the mess, time and cost! It’s very rewarding to be able to step back and look at the final result of all that work!
★ It’s tangible! You can touch it which is important to many!
★ It’s Expensive! I among many scrapbooking hobbyists will concur with the fact that when you build up a collection for scrapbooking, you invest a lot of money.
★ Inconvenient! Some scrapbookers enjoy shopping for new products, but it can be time consuming and depending on their location – finding what they are looking for can be difficult. Online shopping certainly helps, but you still have to wait for delivery.
★ What you see is what you get! You can’t really change the color of a paper or element!
★ Mistakes.. can be expensive. If you cut something wrong or glue something in the wrong place, it can ruin your page and the product you just spent all that money on!
★ Time consuming! Planning, picking out supplies and putting it all together can take a lot of time!
★ Messy! Scrapbooking can be messy, especially if you use glue and paints! After all the effort of putting the page together, cleaning it all up can be a drag.
★ Bulky albums! If you store your pages in an album, they can get bulky (and squished). Also, pieces can become loose and fall off.. not a pretty sight!
